The Winter Solstice marks the day the sun reaches its most southerly declination and is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn. Solstice literally means stopping, as the Sun apparently stops and changes its course. For us in the Northern Hemisphere this is the shortest day and the longest night, the beginning of Winter. Across cultures there are rituals of light during this time; yet in our electronic lit-up world, it is becoming vitally important to consider the value of darkness.
The Fruitful Darkness is an evening of yoga nidra mindfulness practice that will provide you with an opportunity to pause, stop, reflect, and reorient. We will:
- Practice a relaxation meditation that invites your body and mind to enter a slower and calmer state of being.
- Do a writing reflection exercise that energizes a private inquiry into where you have been and clarifies where you are now.
- Explore the positive aspects of darkness as understood by various traditions and disciplines.
- Consider the power and skill of not knowing.
- Reframe your understanding of the difficult and negative dimensions of life.
All are welcome. No yoga or meditation experience is necessary. Please have a blanket or wrap to be warm for relaxation practices, and pad/pen for personal writing exercises.
