The Sanskrit letters are the mothers of our inner spiritual being…The letters are the root forms of Shakti and bring her energy into our minds, hearts and bodies. Reciting the alphabet constitutes a complete ‘mantric workout’ for all aspects of our mind, prana and senses. If we chant the Sanskrit alphabet with concentration and awareness, its letters can awaken the Kundalini force within us and transform our entire being.
Mantra Yoga and Primal Sound Dr. David Frawley
This six-week workshop focuses on the Sanskrit alphabet as a core mantra practice to bring balance and harmony to body, breath and mind. Each session includes:
- chanting the alphabet and practicing the writing of each letter of the alphabet, a practice known as Likhita Japa.
- Work with the pranayama practice known as Aham Meditation and exploration of other traditional core mantras.
- Yoga Sutra chanting as a way to vibrationally rather than conceptually experience the teachings of this foundational Yoga treatise.
The core practice to take away from the program is the Mantra Purusha, or the Body of Sound. This is a practice of placing the vibrations of the Sanskrit alphabet on specific locations of the body that are associated with marma points, or energy points. In the practice of Mantra Purusha the vibrational flow of energy in the body attunes the body to the flow of energy in the natural or universal world around us. According to Vamadeva, “through changing the frequencies of the subtle body of sound, we can bring healing into the physical body and remove negativities from the mind.” In essence, we are practicing Mantra Therapy in order to open our higher and more subtle awareness.
Sincere students of all levels are welcome to come explore this powerful form of Yoga healing.
For those attending for YTT credit or Yoga Alliance CEC’s the following evaluations will be required to receive a 15 hour certificate of completion:
- Memorization of Mantra Purusha and the location points on the body
- A 2-page paper summarizing your experience of the practices presented.
- A daily log of your personal practice.
- A daily representation of the Likhita Japa practices.
- Your attendance at all 6 sessions is agreed. Makeup sessions can be scheduled for an additional fee of $50/hour.
Dr. Cynthia Russell, musician and educator, received her Yoga training through Yoga Connection in Tucson, AZ, and through many hours of workshops offered by Rama Jyoti Vernon and other wonderful teachers along the way. She is continuing her studies through The American Institute of Vedic Studies under the guidance of Dr. David Frawley. She is a 500 hour registered yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance.
Cynthia brings decades of experience, teaching all ages of people how to enter into a positive experience with their voices. Teaching in many settings throughout her career she has learned to feel how the voice and body dance together to vibrate the essence of the soul. Her degrees in vocal performance and music education provided unique opportunities to observe other singers (of all ages) and to come to deeply discern vocal health and wellbeing as expressed through the human voice. Cynthia now offers these skills and experiences in the Yoga setting where the sounds of the Sanskrit Alphabet and the ground of the Eight Limbs of Yoga influence her offerings at Sol Center and beyond.
She fell in love with the sounds of Sanskrit while studying the Yoga Sutras with Rama and continues to develop ways to share this love with others. She believes it is the vibrations of the sounds themselves that hold meaning and knows from her own experience that the more she engages these sounds the more wisdom and knowledge is imparted by them. Deep and lasting healing follows the dedicated practice of these sounds.
