It’s often said that yoga is a path to self-knowledge: to understand our inner nature. Self-inquiry, therefore, is one way we can work to gain knowledge of ourselves, and journaling is one practical and powerful tool to do just that!
During this session, we will first regulate the nervous system through grounding, intuitive movement set to music and with instruction that allows you to observe sensation (rather than shape or form). Depending on the needs and energy of the group, we may then integrate this with a guided meditation after. From there, we will transition into practicing simple guided journaling techniques based on a series of open-ended questions/prompts. You will not be required to share any of your journaling, but there may be some time for open discussion if students desire to share reflections.
The focus of this workshop is on uncovering insights about a personal challenge or decision you are facing (rather than creating a polished writing piece). As such, it is a great space to explore a question or area that you feel stuck or could use inner guidance free from cultural conditioning of influence of friends/family. You don’t have to be a skilled writer nor enjoy the act of writing to learn from the practice of journaling to participate!
Along with your yoga mat, please bring a journal and pen with you to this practice.
Kelly Barrett (E-RYT-200) completed her teacher training through Yoga District in Washington, D.C. in 2013 after spending years falling in love with the transformative quality of yoga. Over the past four years she has led hundreds of students through online courses featuring a variety of exploratory modalities including journaling, meditation, Tarot reading and nature walks. As an accomplished writer with thousands of newsletter readers and work published in Nat Geo, Washington Post and beyond, she remains especially drawn to the power of writing to further one’s own self-knowledge. Her mission is to help people tap into their innate curiosity to uncover their innermost truth — so that they can courageously step into that truth through their decisions and actions. She’s inspired by the community of yoga here in Tucson and seeks to offer a space where students can simply find where their practice takes them next.
