Under a Vedic Sun: Yogic Astrology Explored, with Stephen Russell

Jyotishveda, is also referred to as Vedic, Eastern, or Yogic Astrology. It is based in astronomy and an intimate, ancient understanding of the night sky and the cosmos beyond. Before there was a split between science and religion, astronomy naturally corresponded to an application of life on earth and humanity’s place within the cosmos. Vedic Astrology maintains that understanding and is still considered a spiritual science in India.

Along with Ayurveda- the science of life and health- and Yoga- the science of consciousness, Jyotishveda is part of a complete system for aligning ones life with universal principles, understanding and transforming difficulties, and remembering the Light within us that connects all of life.

In this Second Sunday discussion the difference between the Western and Eastern system of Astrology will be introduced, and you will learn your personal Sun Sign- you may not be who you think you are! We’ll then explore 3 ways the Sun’s placement in the Vedic Chart gives clues for personal growth and self-actualization. How you appear to others, the affect your actions have in the world, and your reputation are some traditional correlates. Most importantly, the Vedic Sun’s placement by sign and house illuminates what life needs from you and asks in return. The history of calendars, the theory of karma, and the difference between fate and destiny, agency and free will, along with a smattering of depth psychology will all be touched on as we look through the Vedic lens together.

The Second Sunday Circle is a monthly gathering devoted to exploring the many dimensions of spiritual perspective, path, and practice. Each session offers a fresh theme—drawn from the real questions, transitions, and inspirations shaping our lives and our world. Some months invite us into quiet reflection or guided meditation; others open space for conversation, ritual, writing, movement, or shared inquiry. All are designed to help us deepen awareness, cultivate resilience, and connect meaningfully with one another.

Rather than a lecture or a class, the Circle is an experiential and conversational space. Participants are encouraged to bring their curiosity, their lived experience, and their willingness to engage with ideas that touch the heart as well as the mind. Topics range widely—from grief and healing, to purpose and soul-work, to relational wellbeing, to solitude, creativity, and the art of being human. Each facilitator brings their own lens, offering teachings, practices, and reflections that support personal insight and collective wisdom.

Whether you’ve been part of the Sol Center community for years or are joining us for the first time, the Circle is a welcoming place to land. It’s an opportunity to slow down, listen deeply, and explore what it means to live with intention and compassion in changing times. All are invited to participate in whatever way feels right, quietly, actively, or somewhere in between.

Stephen Russell has worked Canyon Ranch in Tucson since 2021 as a Vedic Astrologer and Vedic Palm Reader, lecturer on Metaphysical practices, and a featured speaker for group events.  A lifelong lover of literature and mythology, an informal student of Western Astrology, the I Ching, Tarot, and Celtic Runes, he found metaphysics a natural fit for integrating story telling with pragmatic skills for personal growth.  Following his first Vedic Astrology reading with Natasha Korshak over a decade ago, Stephen enrolled in classes at the American Institute for Vedic Studies, under the tutelage of Dr. David Frawley, aka Sri Vamadeva Shastri, and has helped over 3000 clients since receiving his 300-hour Ayurvedic Astrology Certificate.

Recently retired from Canyon Ranch, Stephen continues to gives seminars on Vedic Astrology and maintains a diverse group of clients from around the world though his private practice American Vedic Astrology.  He credits his wife Cynthia Russell for encouraging him to move beyond his early career in retail management, for inspiring his interest in yogic philosophy, and for her profound and compassionate Aquarian energies.
