Pregnancy and birth have a far reaching impact on the body, mind and heart; the postnatal phase in a birthing person’s life has an enormous potential for healing and growth. This workshop will focus on the foundational elements of movement, breath and touch to support recovery and healing after birth whether that was 3 weeks or 5 years ago.

We will explore some relevant basic anatomy, embody these structures through yoga asana and further support the body through breathwork and Myofascial Release (MFR). MFR is a touch-based therapy that works with the fascial system to resolve pain and tension and support functional posture and movement. MFR is a powerful tool for recovery in the postpartum period and can reset the pelvis, rehabilitate the pelvic floor, heal scars from tears or procedures, reconnect the core, and help process the birth experience. Yoga asana, breathwork and MFR self-treatment will be taught with a focus on the unique needs of the body after giving birth.

Siri Garfinkel, OTR/L CYT is a Myofascial Release (MFR) therapist and yoga teacher who specializes in helping people with chronic pain, prenatal and postpartum bodies and pelvic health. Siri found yoga as a teenager and studied to be a yoga teacher beginning in 2006; over the years she taught yoga asana from a variety of traditions, worked one-on-one as a yoga therapist, lived and taught in yoga communities and was particularly inspired by working with birthing people. Siri became an Occupational Therapist (OT) in 2015 and brought her background in yoga to working with people in medical settings. Throughout her adult life, Siri struggled with chronic pain from injuries and in the context of her pregnancy and postpartum journeys. Siri found MFR in 2019 as a more holistic and effective approach to healing when traditional medicine offered little relief to her pain during her second pregnancy. Siri recently left her inpatient OT position to focus on her business, Open Hands OT, where she uses MFR to support others to resolve pain, restore function and reclaim vitality.
