Second Sunday Circle for this month:

The seeds of story are all around us. We are always surrounded by stories – and thus, the first step is awareness: becoming more aware of the stories that we hear and tell, as well as those that are waiting to be told, wanting to tell themselves. With a strong focus on story listening, this interactive and participatory workshop will give you some tools for finding your stories.

We will begin by using a visualization exercise, Rory’s Story Cubes, and a practice of writing as remembering to help us identify a handful of stories, that we will then share using a guided process that has listeners reflect back to us as tellers what these stories are doing and how they mean.  By asking how a story means, we think about how it could have been different, and why this matters. We start to illuminate what this story is doing, and – crucially – what it could be doing.

As a story practitioner, my orientation to story is that they “remember us to ourselves.”  It matters that we pay attention to our stories. It matters which ones we choose to give voice to. And it also matters how we share them. When we bring a sense of choicefulness to the meanings that we give them and the meanings that we take away, we tap into new sources of our own insight, wisdom, and knowingness.

The Second Sunday Circle is a monthly gathering to explore diverse topics relating to spiritual perspective, path, and practice in an experiential and conversational format. Long time and brand new sol center friends are welcome.

Anna Marie Trester PhD is a linguist and storyteller. She finds expression for her passion for language through her avocation as a storyteller and her vocation as a story practitioner with the FrameWorks Institute. She is committed to helping linguists find professional expression of their work and helping the “world of work” realize just how much it is that they need linguists! As a storyteller, she has told with Odyssey Storytelling and Tellers of Tales here in Tucson and before that with Better Said Than Done in Fairfax Virginia. Spiritually, she is a seeker who revels in the connections among the many pathways into practice. Raised Catholic, she spent her teens, twenties, and thirties exploring many Christian traditions, including Episcopalian, Methodist, AME, and Unitarian Universalist. At a New Year’s Eve party in 2000, her results from a “what religion are you?” quiz led her to Quakerism – a tradition that she participated with for nearly a decade. The Quaker tradition of silent contemplative practice formed a foundation that led to a meditation practice and to sanghas and communities. She has been meditating with The Sol Center since she moved to Tucson.
